Community Profile

Upon completion of the project, our partner in the field reports...

The site was picked in a participatory manner where the District Engineer, Bugari Village Leader and LWI staff were all involved. The site was chosen due to the high need for water in the area. The primary point person to work with was the Bugari Village Leader who also assisted the LWIR team in obtaining a plot of land for drilling. The same leader mobilized the community to attend hygiene training sessions and he requested that they contribute in forms of labor during pump installation. The sustainability coordinator discussed with the community how they could gather funds to upgrade the hand pump into an electric pump to get more water. He also oriented the community leaders on the establishment of a water management committee. Community leaders agreed to form the committee just after the project completion. The discussions resulted in mutual agreement to fix the tariff equivalent to 10 Francs per Jerican of water and 200 Francs per family per month as a pump repair savings account. The tariffs will be collected and managed by the committee once it is established. At the end of the training, one old man in the village gave a testimony on how he has lived in the same village for 45 years using unclean water from swamp. He said that it is a miracle for him and his neighbors to get water on their mountain and he thanked the LWI team greatly.

The LWI Rwanda team had an opportunity to meet with forty-nine year old community member and farmer, Pierre Nzabandora, who stated, "I could not believe I got water so near my home. This is a miracle!"

During the hygiene education, the LWI Rwanda team addresses: Hand washing, how to properly transport and store water, disease transmission and prevention, how to maintain proper care of the pump, as well as signs and symptoms of dehydration and how to make Oral Rehydration Solution. All of these lessons are taught in a participatory method to help community members discover ways to improve their hygiene and sanitation choices, and implement community driven solutions.

We're just getting started, check back soon!

Project Type

Abundant water is often right under our feet! Beneath the Earth’s surface, rivers called aquifers flow through layers of sediment and rock, providing a constant supply of safe water. For borehole wells, we drill deep into the earth, allowing us to access this water which is naturally filtered and protected from sources of contamination at the surface level. First, we decide where to drill by surveying the area and determining where aquifers are likely to sit. To reach the underground water, our drill rigs plunge through meters (sometimes even hundreds of meters!) of soil, silt, rock, and more. Once the drill finds water, we build a well platform and attach a hand pump. If all goes as planned, the community is left with a safe, closed water source providing around five gallons of water per minute! Learn more here!
